Jurong Lake District
Singapore
2016
As part of the overall masterplan proposal, the former Jurong Town Hall and Singapore Science Centre, 1970s brutalist-expressed concrete buildings, are rejuvenated by adaptive re-use and integration into the wider urban planning.
The Town Hall is ‘opened up’ internally to create public, community and entertainment spaces. New playfully-expressed staircases and lifts carry visitors to a landscaped roof terrace activated with cafes, bars, restaurants and sculpture gardens; with elevated views of the new 2nd CBD of Singapore.
The Science Centre is transformed into a Design Museum. The unsympathetic additions are removed, and the original pure geometric forms are reinforced by inserting complementary elements. Original courtyards are ideal as large artefact exhibition space, day-lit via new skylights which also reveal a new lively roof terrace with F&B activity.
