Bayshore Park Underpass
Singapore
2015
The original 1980s underpass crossing the highway was utilitarian stair access and dark tunnel, reconfigured and renewed to meet barrier-free access requirements and more sophisticated public expectations. New ramps at both ends are opportunity for expressive architecture; sculpturing into dynamic geometric forms, aided by colour and daylight to create the sense of movement through space.
Dappled light filtered through trees plays on the chrome yellow roof. The twisting serpentine element along the curved ramp length creates a complex spatial form experienced inside and outside.
A key idea is the subterranean experience before emerging upwards along the ramp on the other side. The black and white ‘barcode’ tiles below ground contrast with the yellow ‘origami’ roof floating above the gap in between; which is the light and green.
